"Kid Gloves - A Modaji Long Player" - No digital audio!

It’s over 7 years since Dominic Jacobson released his first works on vinyl to the unsuspecting world at large.

Initially signing to Laws of Motion for the release of three e.ps and 2 albums, the Modaji moniker found favour with future jazz and broken beat heads the world over. Cuts like ‘Outboard Jeopardy’ and ‘End Zones’ got props and heavy rotation from luminaries such as Francois K, Patrick Forge, Gilles Peterson, Derrick May and Ashley Beedle, leading to remix work for artists such as United Future Organization, Charlie Watts, Misia, KJM, Tom and Joyce and Ursula Rucker among others. The release of the album Pre-Sets, a collection of 12” material released by Modaji on Laws of Motion and licensed by File in Japan, cemented a reputation for making quality music fusing Jazz, Soul, Techno ,Bossa and House to make a hybrid groove that had a unique depth and character.

With licenses and tracks for compilations like Yellow’s Bossa Tres Jazz and Compost’s Glücklich and Future Sound of Jazz series, Dominic’s reputation grew on the international scene resulting in European DJ’ing tours with artists such as Zero 7,Jazzanova, King Britt, Bugz in the Attic and the restless soul crew.
Appearances at Paris’s Rex club, Lisbon’s Lux, Mondo in Madrid, Ministry of Sound in London and the Mojo in Hamburg helped establish Dominic’s European reputation as a DJ who is comfortable playing every style of club music from Hip Hop to House and Bossa to Boogie. Festivals such as Amsterdam’s Drum Rhythm Festival and the U.K’s Big Chill also bore witness to the scope of the Modaji selection.

The second album showcased a song focused style that was more soul orientated than the previous Laws of Motion ventures. Writing with musicians such as Kaidi Tatham and Danny Huckridge and working with vocalists like Marcus Begg, Jag and Mellissa Browne, the album was a relaxed affair drawing primarily on the influence of 70’s R’n’b and Jazz Funk. With a license to Toy’s Factory in Japan, the album sold in the region of 20,000 copies with numerous licenses and remixes from Jon Cutler and Jazztronik. The album also resulted in DJ tours of Japan and America as well as visits to Singapore and Canada.

After the 2nd LP Dominic set up the ill fated Super8 label, resulting in 3 releases including the critically acclaimed Liverwire 12”. In 2003 the distributor went bust, which left the label in limbo. However, plans are in the making for the resurrection of the label in 2006. The consequent bankruptcy of Laws of Motion now left the Modaji name without a label so Dominic Jacobson decided to take his wares abroad to Japan for the next instalment.

The resulting third album for Planet Groove records under the name Harvey Lindo, entitled Kid Gloves – A Modaji long player, was released in July 2005 in Japan to much acclaim from critics and heads alike. Adopting a hip hop style that had been previously unheard from Dominic, the album featured underground magnates such as Lacks and Maspyke as well as Count Bass D and Phillipa Alexander. Although this appeared to be unchartered territory for the Modaji sound , the original demos for Laws of Motion were all Hip Hop instrumentals, so this was a sound that came naturally to the sample stalwart.

Now it´s time to spread this album in the rest of the world and Compost Records is proud to present you this fine earcandy!
